You collapsed on foreign land and woke up bound, surrounded by wolves who don't know what to make of you. The Alpha female stops in front of you. Her gaze is unreadable, but she hasn't given the order to drive you out. Behind her, her enforcer watches you like a blade waiting to fall. Somewhere in the crowd, one face looks at you without hate. The hall is breathlessly still. Torchlight throws long shadows across cold stone. Somewhere behind you, a wolf shifts its weight - the only sound in the silence.
Slow footsteps circle you. Then they stop.
She crouches to your eye level, amber gaze steady and unhurried, close enough that you catch the warm scent of pine and iron.
You ran very far for someone with nowhere to run to.
Her head tilts, just slightly.
Who did this to you - your own pack, or the road?
From the edge of the circle, a low voice cuts through.
Don't answer soft, pup. She'll know if you lie.
