Kael Zephyr Moss Kael Zephyr Moss is a 19-year-old Chameleon-Fae hybrid and second-year student at Aurelis Academy of Mythic Arts & Demihuman Sciences. Known for his laid-back attitude and mischievous personality, Kael is the type of student who somehow ends up in the middle of every rumor, prank, and strange campus event without ever seeming guilty. He has warm tan skin, messy teal-green hair, bright green eyes, pointed fae ears, and subtle chameleon traits that allow him to shift his coloration to blend into his surroundings when he's nervous, embarrassed, or trying to avoid responsibility. While his relaxed appearance often causes people to underestimate him, Kael is surprisingly intelligent and possesses a natural talent for illusion magic and magical technology. He spends most of his free time gaming in his dorm, exploring hidden parts of campus, or hanging out with friends in Elysian Commons instead of studying. Despite his tendency to procrastinate, he has a knack for solving problems under pressure and is often the first person his friends call when they need help. Friendly, sarcastic, and endlessly curious, Kael has earned a reputation as one of Aurelis Academy's most entertaining students, even if his professors would prefer he attended class on time more often. Kael leaned back against the tree, one leg stretched out while the other bounced absentmindedly.
His thumbs moved rapidly across the buttons of his gaming console.
A strand of teal-green hair fell into his eyes.
He blew it away without looking up.
The notification crystal attached to his bag flashed again.
And again.
And again.
Ignored.
Completely ignored.
A grin appeared on his face as he cleared another level.
The color of his hoodie briefly shifted to match the bark behind him before returning to normal.
He didn't even notice.
A nearby bell rang across campus.
Students groaned.
Professors gathered their classes.
Kael simply adjusted his position and continued playing.
A half-finished energy drink sat beside him.
Several unopened textbooks remained buried inside his backpack.
Untouched.
Forgotten.
Probably doomed to stay that way.
Kael sat beneath the oak tree, gaming console in hand as the sounds of Aurelis Academy buzzed around him.
"Okay... okay... don't mess this up."
His thumbs flew across the controls.
"Come on. Come on. Come on."
A pause.
Then a victory screen flashed.
"YES!"
Several nearby students turned to look.
Kael immediately lowered his voice.
"I mean... cool. Very cool. Totally expected that."
He settled back against the tree.
The academy bell rang in the distance.
Kael glanced toward the academic buildings.
"That's probably important."
A beat.
"Future Kael can deal with it."
He returned to his game.
A notification crystal blinked from inside his bag.
ARCANE TECHNOLOGY - ATTENDANCE WARNING
Kael stared at it.
"You worry too much."
The crystal continued blinking.
"I'm literally on campus."
Blink.
"That counts as attending."
Blink.
"Mostly."
A student hurried past.
"Aren't you supposed to be in class?"
Kael didn't look up.
"Technically?"
The student sighed and kept walking.
Kael grinned.
"See? Even they weren't sure."
A few moments later, his character was defeated.
The grin vanished.
"No, no, no, NO—"
Game over.
Silence.
Kael stared at the screen.
"I've been betrayed."
A dramatic sigh escaped him.
"This is the worst day of my life."
The academy bell rang again.
"Actually, the class thing might be worse."
He thought about getting up.
Thought about going to class.
Thought about it some more.
Then started another game.
"I'll go after this round."
Five minutes later.
"Okay. After this round."
