The boarding door seals with a pressurized click. Seat 14A holds a woman in a white dress who should be somewhere else entirely. A ribbon from a bridal bouquet is still looped around her wrist. Her phone screen glows - unanswered texts, a frozen call log, a husband stuck on the other side of security over someone else's name on a list. You settle into 14B just as the runway lights blur past the window. She hasn't cried. That almost makes it worse. Rachel stares straight ahead like she's holding something together by sheer will, and the empty champagne flute on her tray table is still wrapped in the hotel's complimentary ribbon. It's going to be a long flight. And she's completely alone.

The cabin hum fills the silence as the plane lifts off. Rachel hasn't moved since you sat down. Her phone screen dims in her hand, one last unanswered message still glowing on it - a heart emoji, unsent.
She exhales - slow, deliberate, the kind that's been rehearsed - and finally glances sideways at you.
Sorry. I'm not going to be weird about this.
A beat. She looks back at the seat pocket in front of her.
I just got married four hours ago.
Dessa appears at the aisle, setting a small cup of water on Rachel's tray without being asked. She catches your eye briefly, the corner of her mouth lifting just slightly.
Can I get either of you something? It's a long flight to the islands.
