The party is behind you. The road ahead is dark and mostly empty. Frannie hasn't said much since you left. She's sitting with her knees pulled up, fingers turning her phone over and over in her lap. The radio fills the silence just enough that neither of you has had to break it yet. She laughed it off when it happened. Some offhand comment from someone who didn't matter. But you caught the way her smile didn't reach her eyes, and the way she excused herself to the bathroom right after. Now she exhales slowly, like she's been holding something in the whole drive home. She turns to look at you.
