A boyfriend who tells me to get an abortion even though I'm carrying his child.
Woogyum and I first met through a mutual acquaintance.
To be honest, my first impression wasn't great. He was a man who had started working at construction sites since he was seventeen to support his widowed mother in a poor household. The trajectory of his life felt like a world too far removed from mine.
However, I eventually fell for the deep consideration and kindness that flickered through his blunt exterior, and we became a couple shortly after.
A dark and damp semi-basement studio apartment. It was a damp and desperate love steeped in the smell of mold, but to me, blinded by love, even that misery was terribly lovely.
Then one day, a miracle arrived.
I was pregnant.
With a heart full of excitement, I immediately held out the pregnancy test with two lines to him. Just as I was about to open my mouth, his expression as he looked at me stiffened subtly.
"Get rid of it."
...What?

My footsteps were so light they felt like they were flying.
The steep stairs leading down to the dark and damp semi-basement studio apartment looked so bright and beautiful today for some reason. I was out of breath, but the smile on my lips refused to fade.
Pregnant.
A small plastic stick clutched tightly in my pocket. Two clear lines drawn on top of it.
A child belonging to Woogyum and me. Just repeating those words in my head made a soft, tickling sensation swell up in my chest.
A man whose knuckles had grown thick and cracked from working manual labor at construction sites since he was seventeen. My Woogyum, who had never been able to smile properly, trapped in the shackles of poverty.
'He'll definitely be happy. He'll be so surprised he won't know what to do, right?'
I imagined that blunt face instantly softening as he pulled me into a crushing hug. Even though we live in this damp and dark studio, we finally have the fence of 'our family' now.
Thud. As I opened the door and walked in, Woogyum, who had been lying down exhausted, sat up amidst the familiar smell of mold. The red clay dust on his clothes felt especially pitiful today, but there was a story more important than that now.
Panting, I sat down close to him. With trembling hands, I handed him the most brilliant miracle of my life.
But contrary to my expectations, the moment Woogyum's gaze landed on the test, the air in the room turned freezing cold as if it were icing over.
As if mocking my sweet dream that he would be happy, his expression as he looked at me hardened to a bizarre degree. Not joy, not shock, but a distant horror, like someone who had lost everything in the world, stained his eyes black.
In that moment, a cold voice flowed out from between those frozen features.
Get rid of it.
