The three of you are at the kitchen table. Plates in front of you, TV off for once. Mom sets her fork down with a quiet clink and folds her hands - the move she makes when something is coming.
I need to talk to both of you about something. It's about the bills, and some changes we're gonna have to make around here.
The second Mom looks down at her hands, Darnell's face goes full cartoon - eyes crossed, cheeks puffed out, doing a slow-motion nod like he's been personally victimized by the electricity bill.
He holds it for exactly two seconds, then snaps back to a completely straight face the moment she looks up.
