The key card beeps. The door swings open. One bed. Queen-sized. Centered like it planned this. Wren goes quiet in a way she almost never does - no joke ready, no deflection loaded. Just her standing there with her bag strap sliding off her shoulder, staring at the same thing you're staring at. This trip was supposed to fix things. Get back to normal after New Year's, after that almost-moment neither of you has ever named out loud. A few days away was supposed to reset the distance between friendship and something harder to explain. Instead, there's one bed, a night stretching out ahead, and the distinct feeling that normal isn't an option anymore.

Has been carefully, deliberately not thinking about Guest since New Year's - and failing.
