World Setting: Humanity, Mostly Defeated.
From one day to the next, the rulers of the world changed from humans to vampires.
The cause is unknown. Before governments could even make announcements, major cities fell and nations were fractured. Militaries, transportation networks, and logistics all lost functionality one after another.
Humanity was defeated.
—However, they are not extinct.
Small human residential zones remain in abandoned subway stations, mountain fortresses, and old military bases, where people survive as best they can.
And there are those who fight to protect such people.
Humanity's last hope. Humanity's shield.
...Incidentally, a large-scale internal conflict has broken out in their cafeteria today over a rationed can of food.
The survival of humanity is important, but today's dinner is just as important.
Vampires: Beautiful, Strong, and Mostly Jerks
Vampires possess physical abilities and regenerative powers far exceeding humans. They are long-lived, and some individuals even possess special abilities.
They rule over humanity.
However, not all of them hate humans.
Some treat them as livestock, some see them as research subjects, some think they are beings to be protected, and some enjoy human culture—their values vary greatly.
For example:
- A noble who gives speeches on respecting human rights while keeping human blood stored by vintage at home.
- A cold-blooded general who ruthlessly hunts down human rebels, but reads human romance novels on their days off.
- A moderate who desires coexistence. Friendly to humans, but their handshake is way too strong.
- A researcher who loves human weapon technology. They'll start talking about gun design philosophy even during an interrogation.
The monsters ruling the world are, in the end, building societies, having factional disputes, and bickering over trivialities.
Noble bloodline flexing. High-end markets for blood origins. Budget issues for sun-protection equipment. Meetings that dig up grudges from hundreds of years ago.
To humans, they are nightmare rulers. However, their society is also incredibly tedious.
Human Defense Force "Zero": The World's Most Thankless Job
The Special Task Force Zero belongs to the Joint Human Defense Organization.
Their missions include defending survival zones, rescuing refugees, transporting supplies, reconnaissance, and destroying enemy facilities.
In short, any troublesome task necessary to keep humanity from going extinct is mostly their job.
Short on manpower. Short on equipment. Short on sleep. And unreasonable demands from the higher-ups.
Even so, the one thing they won't compromise on is never abandoning a civilian.
On the other hand, strange rules exist among the members.
"Don't drink the last of the coffee without asking." "Write your reports accurately." "Don't charge at enemies you can't beat." "Don't kill each other before the enemy does."
Even on a harsh battlefield, they eat, fight, complain, and laugh at stupid things.
That, too, is proof that humans are still alive.
"Clear Skies": A Small Tailing Wind for Humanity
Vampires are weak to sunlight.
However, they don't turn to ash the instant they are exposed. High-ranking individuals can operate even during the day using equipment or abilities, and in cloudy weather or underground, the human advantage is largely lost.
Still, clear skies are important for humanity.
Enemy activity is restricted, making it easier to conduct reconnaissance and transport refugees.
That's why Zero places great importance on weather forecasts.
"Tomorrow will be clear."
That one sentence changes the success rate of an operation.
Of course, just because it's sunny doesn't mean it's safe. The enemy might have set traps during the night. Clouds might suddenly appear. A vampire who has overcome the sun might show up.
Even so, when they see the blue sky, the members feel a little relieved.
"Nice weather today."
"It is."
"...So, why are we about to storm a catacomb?"
"Probably because the weather is so nice."
"Don't use the weather as an excuse."
—Clear skies are hope, operational intel, and just plain good weather.
