Some inherit kingdoms, others steal the sky.
Nobody truly understands what the aether is. Scholars argue endlessly. Engineers measure it. Explorers simply try not to fall through it. The aether exists above the cloud layer as an endless sea of pale blue currents flowing between islands of stone that should not exist. It shimmers at dawn like sunlight and can be condensed, bottled, refined, and burned as an impossibly efficient source of lift and power. Without aether there are no skyships. No floating cities. No airborne fortresses. No prosperity. Entire industries exist solely to harvest it from dangerous atmospheric currents.
As a formally recognised Aether Knight, it is no surprise that Serra has an athletic build. Shaped by climbing rigging, carrying heavy equipment and spending years aboard skyships. Dark chestnut hair is tied into practical twin buns that fit comfortably beneath her sealed aether helmet. Warm brown eyes constantly scan her surroundings, measuring distances almost unconsciously. Her white flight suit contrasts against worn leather harnesses and polished brass fittings. Every buckle, strap and reinforced seam feels functional. Serra embodies competence. Not arrogance. Competence. She thrives under the pressure of an emergency, taking on challenges with her parrying dagger between her teeth. Her jokes are dry enough that her comrade, Scrongle usually misses them. She forms friendships slowly, but those friendships become lifelong commitments.
Her true name among the Batfolk can't be pronounced by ordinary humans, so she goes by Scrongle. Scrongle works alongside, Serra. Where Serra might represents discipline... Scrongle represents instinct. She understands the skies in ways maps never could. She hears storms before instruments detect them and can feel changes in pressure. With enormous ears that rotate independently while she listens, Scrongle inadvertently gives away what has caught her attention. Soft chestnut fur covers most of her body, interrupted only by a pale patch along her chest. Immense black eyes dominate her face, glossy enough to reflect surrounding light. Large membranous wings fold under her arms, ready to be deployed as she spreads them. Rarely walking in a straight line. Instead, Scrongle hops. Climbs and hangs upside down.
Rowan is a Marquis, responsible for a border territory in the Sky Empire. Much loved by his subordinates and respected by his enemies. Rowan is warm. Patient. He laughs easily. But when Rowan draws his sword... everyone knows negotiations have failed. Rowan is broad shouldered and powerfully built without appearing bulky. Years of campaigning have left faint scars across his hands and forearms, while his beard has begun showing the first hints of grey. Green eyes soften an otherwise imposing face. His floral breastplate is forged bronze, chased with climbing roses, matching his bronze basket hilt rapier always by his hip. When Rowan is not in his bronze aether armour, he's usually in a purple dress shirt. Marquis Rowan has taken on the promosing mechanic Tilly, as his squire. Showing her how to maintain arms and armour as well as the art of war.
An eager Squire, Tilly works to maintain Rowan's equipment. Sharpening blades. Repairing aether engines. Adjusting armour fittings. Resourceful. Endlessly curious. She asks questions constantly. Rowan secretly enjoys answering every single one. She collects broken mechanisms because "they might be useful later." Tilly has shoulder length honey brown hair that never quite stays tidy. Freckles dust her cheeks, shoulders and nose, giving her an outdoorsy appearance despite spending most days surrounded by grease and machinery. She favours comfortable clothing over fashionable attire, purple undershirt, denim overalls, heavy leather belt, and her reliable canvas satchel.
Lady Lysa is a Baroness, and she is utterly striking without being ostentatious. Standing upright, with almost effortless posture born from noble upbringing and years of duelling instruction. Long ash brown hair falls well past her shoulders in soft waves. A thin scar runs from her brow through one eye and down her cheek, not disfiguring, but memorable. Lysa has refined features with a slight, knowing smile that almost never disappears. Dressing almost exclusively in deep burgundy for pleasure and black steel for business. Her split dress allows elegant movement while concealing a practical duellist's stance, the black steel rapier at her side is immaculately maintained. Lysa is willing to do whatever it takes to get ahead, taking on once common criminals like Vesper. She refines them into useful tools to furher her agenda.
Vesper is a rabbitfolk woman with sleek charcoal fur covering her limbs and a thick rabbit's tail hidden beneath her burgundy military skirt. Large black ears constantly betray her emotions, like an ear cocked sideways when amused. Her teal tipped bob frames an expressive face dominated by sharp amber eyes and an almost permanent smirk. Compared with Lysa's elegance, Vesper looks energetic and spring loaded. Lean rather than muscular. She's built for speed. Fiercely loyal to Lady Lysa because, for the first time in her life, someone recognised her potential instead of seeing only trouble. Secretly she worries she's still that reckless street thief. Vesper compensates by working twice as hard.
