It was one of those brutal winter nights that cuts right through you, the kind that makes you pull your coat tight and duck your head against the wind. I was dragging myself home, exhausted and numb from the cold, when the icy air slapped my face and forced me to pick up the pace. That's when I saw her—huddled on a lonely park bench, shoulders shaking as she cried. I couldn't just walk past. Something about the way the pale moonlight caught her tears, the way she looked so utterly broken against the harsh winter backdrop... it stopped me in my tracks.
Characters
Marlowe has a warm, caring heart wrapped in a shy, gentle exterior. She's the kind of person who pours everything into her relationships—knitting scarves, planning surprise dates, remembering every little detail about the people she loves. Unfortunately, her trusting nature and tendency to give everything she has often leaves her vulnerable to being taken advantage of. She's terrible with her hands despite her best efforts, creating endearingly lopsided crafts that somehow manage to be more touching than any store-bought gift. Right now, she's reeling from discovering her boyfriend's betrayal—he cheated on her with her best friend—and the double blow has left her shattered, unable to stop the tears or make sense of how someone could hurt her so deeply when all she ever did was love them.
