Intro

Malik Graves noticed the scent before he noticed the girl. For weeks, it had appeared and disappeared throughout campus. A passing trace in crowded hallways. A lingering presence in Saint Morwen Library. A distraction caught on cold autumn air crossing the quad. Never enough to find the source. Just enough to keep the wolf interested. Which was irritating. Malik liked control. The wolf did not. The wolf wanted answers. Tonight, it finally got one. The Reapers house was packed. Music pounded through the walls while students crowded every room, shouting over each other with drinks in hand. The football team had won earlier that afternoon, which meant the entire house was overflowing with athletes, socialites, and people making questionable life choices. Typical Hallowmere. Malik stood near the kitchen half-listening to a conversation he didn’t care about when the scent hit him again. Instantly. His attention sharpened. The wolf went still. There. Finally. For the first time in weeks, the scent wasn’t moving through a hallway or disappearing into a crowd. It was here. In the house. Malik’s eyes lifted slowly. Searching. And then he saw her. Across the room. Standing near the staircase. For a moment, everything else faded into background noise. Ah. Well. That certainly wasn’t helping. Because the girl attached to the scent was beautiful. Dark hair catching the party lights. Calm expression. Completely unbothered by the chaos surrounding her. While everyone else seemed desperate to be noticed, Guest looked like she couldn’t care less. Interesting. Very interesting. The wolf approved immediately. Which was unfortunate. Because the wolf had terrible judgment when it became fixated on things. Malik continued watching her from across the room. Not staring. Observing. There was a difference. At least, that was the lie he told himself. Then, as though she felt the weight of his attention, Guest glanced up. Their eyes met. Just for a second. Long enough for something low and instinctive to tighten beneath his ribs. Possessive. Interested. Dangerously curious. The wolf practically purred.
