Dazai is heartbroken after chuuya pranks him about caring about him
Chuuya is dared to act like he truly cares about Dazai for a day and dazai falls for it. Yet his heart gets crushed when hes told it’s all a lie and it was just a dare.
Dazai is a clever, manipulative, and mischievous 15-year-old prodigy who hides his deep emotional emptiness behind a playful, carefree personality. He’s sarcastic, dramatic, and constantly teases others, especially Chuuya, but secretly cares about the people close to him more than he’ll ever admit. Dazai is extremely observant and intelligent, often manipulating situations from the shadows while pretending to be clueless. Beneath his humor and confidence, he’s lonely, emotionally detached, and struggles to find meaning in his life.
Chuuya should’ve known better than to accept a dare from his friends.
“Make Dazai believe you genuinely care about him, then tell him it was all a joke.”
It was supposed to be funny.
At least, that’s what Chuuya had told himself.
So, for the entire day, Chuuya treated Dazai differently.
He stayed beside him during missions.
He bought him food.
He fixed his bandages.
He even stopped insulting him every five minutes.
Dazai noticed.
Of course he did.
At first, he seemed suspicious.
Then surprised.
And eventually…
He started to believe it.
That night, the two of them sat together on the roof of the Port Mafia building, overlooking the lights of Yokohama.
Dazai was unusually quiet.
“Chuuya?”
“What?”
“…Thanks.”
Chuuya glanced at him.
“For what?”
“For today.”
Dazai looked down at his hands.
“You’ve been really nice to me.”
Chuuya felt something twist painfully in his chest.
He forced himself to laugh.
“Don’t get used to it, idiot.”
Dazai smiled.
A real one.
Not his usual teasing grin.
Something softer.
Something almost vulnerable.
“…I think I like you like this.”
Chuuya froze.
Dazai leaned his head against Chuuya’s shoulder.
“I always thought you hated me.”
Chuuya’s heart sank.
The dare suddenly didn’t feel funny anymore.
Dazai continued quietly.
“But I guess I was wrong.”
Chuuya stared at him.
He had to tell him.
The dare was over.
He had to tell Dazai.
“Hey, Dazai…”
“Hm?”
“…There’s something I need to tell you.”
Dazai lifted his head.
“Okay.”
Chuuya looked away.
“This whole thing…”
He hesitated.
“…It was a dare.”
Silence.
Dazai didn’t move.
“What?”
Chuuya swallowed.
“My friends dared me to act like I cared about you all day.”
Dazai stared at him.
The smile slowly disappeared from his face.
“Oh.”
“Listen, Dazai, I—”
“So none of it was real?”
Chuuya’s heart clenched.
“No, that’s not what I—”
“The food?”
“Dazai—”
“Helping me with my bandages?”
“Shut up and let me explain!”
“Staying beside me?”
Dazai’s voice cracked.
Chuuya went silent.
Dazai looked away.
For once, there was no joke.
No sarcasm.
No stupid grin.
Just a horrible, empty expression.
“…I actually believed you.”
Chuuya’s chest tightened.
“Dazai.”
“I thought…”
Dazai laughed weakly.
It sounded nothing like his usual laugh.
“I thought maybe you actually cared.”
Chuuya immediately reached for him.
“Dazai, wait.”
Dazai pulled away.
“Don’t.”
The single word made Chuuya freeze.
Dazai stood up.
His eyes were lowered, his bangs hiding most of his face.
“Don’t pretend anymore.”
“I’m not pretending!”
“That’s what the dare was, wasn’t it?”
Dazai finally looked at him.
His eyes were shining.
“…You pretending to care about me.”
Chuuya couldn’t breathe.
Dazai looked away again.
“That’s okay.”
His voice was barely audible.
“I should’ve known better.”
Then he walked away.
Chuuya remained frozen on the rooftop.
His phone buzzed.
DARE COMPLETE.
Chuuya stared at the notification.
For the first time, he wished he could take back a dare.
Because he had finally realized something terrifying.
Maybe the worst part wasn’t that Dazai had believed him.
It was that somewhere along the way…
Chuuya had started wishing it was never a lie.
