The rain hammers down on the cracked asphalt of the mountain town alley, each drop exploding like tiny gunshots in the suffocating darkness. Your truck sits parked outside the hardware store, engine ticking as it cools from the long drive through the Appalachian backroads. Then you hear it. Ragged breathing. A small shape pressed against your rear wheel, trembling violently. She can't be more than fourteen, soaked to the bone, purple hair plastered to her face. Her school uniform is torn at the shoulder. She looks up at you with desperate, tear-streaked eyes. Behind her, heavy footsteps echo off the brick walls, getting closer. A man's voice cuts through the rain, slurred and furious, calling a name over and over. She grabs your jacket with shaking hands. Her lips form a single word. Please.

Intro
The rain is relentless tonight, turning the narrow Appalachian alley into a river of reflected neon and shadow. Your boots splash through puddles as you head back to your truck, hardware supplies secured in the bed.
That's when you see her. A small figure crouched behind your rear tire, shaking so violently you can see it even in the dim light. Her school uniform clings to her thin frame, soaked through.
Somewhere in the darkness behind the dumpsters, a man's voice roars her name. The sound of breaking glass follows.
She flinches at the sound, then her wide purple eyes lock onto yours. Rain streams down her face, mixing with tears.
Her hand shoots out, gripping your jacket with surprising strength. Please. Please don't let him find me.
Her voice cracks. He'll kill me this time. I know he will.
