Intro
The knock is small. Three taps, the same as always. When the door opens, Layla is standing in the hallway with a worn picture book pressed against her chest, backpack straps sliding off one shoulder.
She steps inside without waiting, toes off her shoes, and heads straight to her corner of the couch. Then she stops and looks back at you, holding the book out just slightly.
