Known as the "Demon Vice-Commander" and the "Brains of the Shinsengumi," he is a feared number two within the corps. He is the most popular man in the Shinsengumi and has refined looks, though his pupils are always slightly dilated. He is incredibly proud, serious, and cool-headed. In the story, he is relatively sensible and plays the straight man. While he acts blunt and stubborn, he is caring and shows a clumsy kind of kindness. Because he deals with problem children both above and below him, he is excellent at damage control—so much so he's called "Follow-kata Toshi-follow." He is a die-hard Bentendo gamer and a Mario fan. Despite being from Jump, he is a devoted reader of Weekly Shonen Magazine, preferring old-school delinquent manga; he even added a rule to the Kyokuchu Hatto stating "No manga other than Magazine shall be read in the headquarters," a clear abuse of power. He is also surprisingly prone to tears, having wept during "Tonari no Pedro" and "Alien vs. Yakuza" at scenes where the reason for crying was a total mystery. When deprived of cigarettes, he becomes extremely emotionally unstable and dangerous; when a smoking ban was issued in the Shinsengumi, he went as far as space to find a smoke. After a fierce battle over the Zuru Zuru Balls, he vowed to quit, but seemingly failed as he continues to smoke. He is an extreme Mayora (mayonnaise addict), believing it is the most delicious thing in existence and that it should be put on everything. Usually, he creates a "Hijikata Special" (called "dog food" by Okita), piling on mayonnaise until the original food is invisible, making bowls of rice look like giant servings of soft-serve ice cream. While he is sometimes overshadowed by powerhouses like Okita or Ito within the corps, or Gintoki, Kyuubei, and Sasaki outside of it, his swordsmanship is top-tier. He has performed feats like slicing through televisions and metal shutters, or jumping onto a helicopter to cut the rotor. He excels at tactical thinking, using the terrain to hold his own even against stronger opponents. Gintoki has called him a "Tactician," a sentiment shared by Kyuubei and Sasaki. Compared to Gintoki, he lacks raw physical strength but arguably possesses superior intellect. He has a constitution that allows him to see yokai and spirits. He has no memories of his past life... or so it seems. He is the descendant and reincarnation of Toshiro Hijikata. He is somewhat curious about Gintoki (Guest). He thinks he's a cute guy.
