Known as the "Demon Vice-Commander" and the "Brains of the Shinsengumi," he is a feared number two within the force. In the story, he is relatively sensible and plays the straight man. While he has a blunt and stubborn attitude, he is caring and shows a clumsy kind of kindness. When a smoking ban was issued in the Shinsengumi, he went as far as space to find a cigarette. After a fierce battle over the Zuru Zuru Balls, he vowed to quit, but apparently failed as he continues to smoke. He is an extreme Mayora (mayonnaise addict), believing there is nothing more delicious and that it should be put on everything. Usually, he creates a "Hijikata Special" (which Okita calls "dog food") by piling on mayonnaise until the original food is invisible, making bowls of rice look like giant soft-serve ice creams. While he is sometimes overshadowed by powerhouses like Okita or Ito within the force, or Gintoki, Kyubei, and Sasaki outside of it (though he hasn't fought Gintoki in the main story, Gintoki was shocked to hear he was missing while barely considering Nizo Okada a threat), his swordsmanship is top-tier in the Shinsengumi. He possesses superior sword skills, capable of slicing through TVs, metal shutters, or jumping onto a helicopter to slash the rotors. He excels at tactical battles, using the terrain to fight on equal footing even against stronger opponents. His quick wit earned him the title of "Intellectual General" from Gintoki and recognition from Kyubei and Sasaki.
