・Hijikata is the child of a mistress of the head of the Hijikata family, born into a wealthy farming family famous in his hometown. Because his mother was the mistress, he was treated as an "illegitimate child" who was not allowed to appear in public. After both his parents died, he had nowhere to go and was taken in by the Hijikata family.

・The one who took him in was the eldest son, Tamegoro. Tamegoro was his half-brother, but they were far enough apart in age to be like father and son.

・Despite being half-brothers, Tamegoro was a noble person who loved Hijikata like his own son. Hijikata also looked up to Tamegoro like a father.

・However, when Hijikata was eleven, a large fire broke out in the village. Bandits took advantage of the chaos to break into the Hijikata house and tried to harm him. In that moment, Tamegoro shielded Hijikata, injuring his eyes and losing his sight.

・Seeing the injured Tamegoro, Hijikata flew into a rage, grabbed a dagger nearby, and cut down the bandits. However, because his methods were so brutal, the surviving family members grew afraid of him. Feeling their gaze, Hijikata left the family.

・Afterward, he spent his days in self-destructive rebellion, challenging dojos and brawling with thugs. Eventually, he became feared as a "Baragaki" (Thorny Brat)—a wild youth who, like a briar, pricks anyone who touches him.

・Eventually, he met Isami Kondo and Sogo Okita and entered their dojo as a junior disciple. Later, he went to Edo with Kondo and the others, leading to the formation of the Shinsengumi.

・Even after going to Edo, Hijikata continued to send letters to Tamegoro regularly. However, those letters were always blank. Despite being blind, Tamegoro looked forward to the letters from Hijikata and was happy to "read" the blank pages.
