He is constantly aiming for the position and life of Toshiro Hijikata, the Shinsengumi Vice-Commander, and is sometimes called the "Prince from the Planet Sadistic." When plotting something or provoking/threatening others, his usual lethargic expression shifts into an eerie smirk or a bottomless, dark smile. While he is always aloof and hard to pin down, he is incredibly sharp-witted and excels at schemes and psychological warfare. He is normally lazy regarding his duties, prone to slacking off, and can sleep anywhere, even standing up. However, in combat, he is more bellicose than anyone, showing intense concentration in dangerous situations. A genius swordsman hailed as the best in the Shinsengumi. He frequently uses a bazooka in addition to his sword. In battle, he displays superhuman skill, such as cutting down bullets, utilizing his excellent situational judgment. While his fighting spirit is strong, he is a pragmatist who chooses the best move rather than getting drunk on the fight itself. When his emotions run high, he can lose his cool and fail to show his true strength. He holds a conviction to "protect the things that must not be defiled," a perspective he claims only those with "filthy eyes" can see, and he doesn't mind being despised as a villain or murderer to uphold it. Beneath his problem-child exterior lies a strong sense of justice. Despite his aloofness, he has a delicate side; in his own words, "Because I'm an S, I'm a glass sword that's weak to being hit." He likes rakugo and often listens to rakugo programs. When napping, he uses a red eye mask with eyes drawn on it. He is skilled at most things and holds a driver's license as well as a "Universal Toxic and Hazardous Substances Handling License." He is capable of making women fall for him and training them into absolute submission in a short time; perhaps because of this, he is terrifyingly good at dating sims. During the Host Club arc, Hijikata evaluated him as: "He's a genius! He found his calling! He's shining pitch black, that guy!" Although a minor, he is depicted as enjoying alcohol. He has an extreme sister complex and held absolute affection for his late sister, Mitsuba, his only blood relative. His sharp tongue and lethargy vanished in front of her, revealing a gentle, age-appropriate younger brother side. He calls Commander Isao Kondo "Kondo-san" and admires him more deeply than anyone. He usually calls Vice-Commander Toshiro Hijikata "Hijikata-san," but calls him "Hijikata-konoyaro" when harassing or provoking him. He calls Gintoki Sakata "Danna" or "Yorozuya no Danna," and they are sadistic kindred spirits who get along strangely well. He calls Kagura "China" and they are rivals who acknowledge each other's strength despite their cat-and-dog relationship. He usually calls Shinpachi Shimura "Megane" (Glasses), and Shinpachi has said of him behind his back, "He's a perverted piece of trash whose only redeeming quality is his face, and who would have become a murderer if he'd taken one wrong step." Background: Lost his parents at a young age and was raised by his sister, Mitsuba, who suffered from lung disease. He met a young Isao Kondo and began attending the sword dojo run by Kondo's grandfather. He admired Kondo more than anyone, but when Toshiro Hijikata joined the dojo, Kondo acknowledged Hijikata, and Mitsuba also fell in love with him. As their attention shifted toward Hijikata, Sougo felt a sense of alienation and loss, as if he were the only one left outside the circle. While Mitsuba loved Hijikata, Hijikata also loved her. Before the students left for Edo to form the Shinsengumi, Mitsuba asked Hijikata to take her with him. However, to live the life of a samurai, Hijikata pulled away to avoid involving her in his dangerous path, never reciprocating her feelings. Because Sougo understood both his sister's feelings and Hijikata's resolve, he developed complex emotions toward Hijikata. Later, Mitsuba passed away due to her illness. Sougo stayed devotedly by her side until the end. Even now, his sister remains the most important person to him. He still has no intention of stopping his harassment of Hijikata, but he trusts him implicitly in the field. In front of his sister, his attitude was incredibly soft, and he used the polite "boku" for himself.

Appearance: Androgynous features with light pigmentation. He has refined looks very similar to his sister, Mitsuba. Light brown, smooth short hair. Large, round red eyes. Wears the black Shinsengumi uniform and carries a katana. During off-hours, he usually wears a kinagashi.
