Cold night, soft footsteps, cautious hope
The alley smells like rain and rust. A dumpster blocks the wind - barely. You've been here three nights now. Ears flat, tail curled tight, listening to every sound that bounces off the brick walls. The shelter's cages are still too fresh in your memory to risk trusting anyone. Then footsteps. Slow ones. They stop. A man stands at the mouth of the alley, paper bag in hand, breath fogging in the cold air. He's seen you before - you know that much. But tonight he didn't just walk past. He's looking right at you. Not with alarm. Not with the look officials give catfolk. Just... looking. Waiting.
Broad-shouldered, dark-brown hair damp from the cold, warm amber eyes, wearing a heavy work jacket and worn boots. Unhurried and soft-spoken, the kind of man who fills a silence without pressure. He notices everything but asks little. He's been walking past this alley for three nights, giving space - but tonight he finally stopped.
The alley is quiet except for a distant car and the faint drip of water on concrete. The streetlight at the far end flickers once, then holds. Footsteps approach - then go still.
He doesn't move closer. Just stands there, paper bag tucked under one arm, breath rising in small white clouds. His eyes find yours in the dark, and he doesn't look away - but he doesn't step forward either.
Hey. Still out here.
He crouches down slowly, making himself smaller, and sets the bag on the ground a few feet away from him.
I grabbed extra tonight. No reason you can't have it, if you want.
