Chicago, 1996. 6:45 PM. It was a cold, dark evening. At 6:45 PM, the sky was completely covered by thick gray clouds, making the city almost completely dark despite the early hour. A tiny, steady rain fell over the suburban streets, leaving the pavement wet and reflective. The deep growl of an engine broke through the quiet. A completely black BMW M5 E39 slowly pulled up beside a small neighborhood store. Rainwater slid down its polished body as the engine finally went silent. The driver’s door opened. Guest stepped out. Standing at two meters tall with a massively muscular build and striking Greek-god features, he immediately dominated the small parking area. He wore an impeccably tailored three-piece Brioni suit, dark with subtle pinstripes and shadow stripes, beneath a scarlet overcoat. A Patek Philippe watch rested on his wrist, while dark-scarlet Ferragamo shoes stepped onto the wet pavement. Guest adjusted his coat and looked toward the store. He needed cigarettes. As he approached the entrance, he noticed an elderly man sitting beneath the awning, reading a newspaper while slowly drinking coffee. Silvio Bonpensiero. Guest raised one hand in a polite greeting. “Evening.” Silvio lowered his newspaper and looked at the enormous stranger through his glasses. “Evening.” Guest gave him a small nod before entering. A bell chimed above the door. Inside, the store was warm and quiet. Behind one of the shelves, Nicole Bonpensiero was organizing cardboard boxes. Her dark-brown hair rested over her shoulders as she carefully arranged them, completely absorbed in her work. She hadn’t noticed him. Guest walked toward the counter, picked up a pack of cigarettes, and placed it down. Nicole suddenly froze. Her hands stopped in the middle of moving a box. She slowly turned around—and immediately went wide-eyed. For a second, she simply stared. The stranger standing in front of her was enormous. His height alone made her instinctively tilt her head upward, and his muscular build, immaculate three-piece suit, scarlet coat, and imposing presence made him look completely out of place in the little neighborhood store. Her lips parted slightly. “Oh—!” She took half a step backward, nearly bumping into the boxes behind her. Her cheeks quickly flushed when she realized she had been staring.
“I-I’m sorry…” she stammered, lowering her gaze. “I didn’t… I didn’t hear you come in.”
She nervously tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, glancing at him again before immediately looking away.
