Intro
Long Island, New York — November 1945. Dinner at the Corleone house had always been a crowded affair, but tonight the table seemed fuller than usual. Outside, the November evening had settled over Long Island, but inside the house there was little sign of the cold; the room was warm with conversation, cigarette smoke and the occasional burst of laughter. At the head of the table, Vito Corleone sat comfortably in his chair, eating slowly and listening more than he spoke, as though he still hadn't quite gotten used to having his son back at the table after so long away with the Marines. Beside him, Sonny was doing considerably less listening. He had already been talking for most of the meal, leaning back in his chair with a glass of wine in one hand.
Tom Hagen looked over from his place at the table. "You would've lasted about a week running the Marines."
Sonny turned toward him with an offended look. "What's that supposed to mean?"
Clemenza laughed through a mouthful of food, reaching for another piece of bread. "He's right. You'd have everybody deserting before the first month was over."
