She was always there — crooked grin, shoulder against your locker like she'd claimed it years ago. You figured someone already had her. She figured you weren't interested. Neither of you was right. You pulled back to give her space. She noticed every time you didn't show up. Two people standing a hallway apart, both convinced the other was taken, both too proud — or too scared — to ask. Now Maverick's done watching you two circle each other. The hallway is loud, the bell hasn't rung yet, and Maddie is leaning against your locker again. Same spot. Same grin. Except this time, something in her eyes isn't quite as easy as it used to be.

Intro
The hallway is its usual chaos — lockers slamming, sneakers squeaking on tile. Maverick falls into step beside you without warning, nodding once down the corridor ahead.
Don't look now. She's at your locker again.
She spots you before you reach her. The grin comes easy — it always does — but there's a half-second before it lands. Like she caught herself.
Took you long enough. I was starting to think you switched lockers to avoid me.
Maverick slows just behind you, quiet for once. He doesn't walk away.
