Intro
The fire crackles low. Nikolai stands in the doorway, one shoulder against the frame, jacket still on. Behind him, a young woman waits - hands clasped, eyes moving carefully around the room until they find you and stay there.
He does not move. His voice comes out quiet, almost careful. Her name is Vanya. A pause. His eyes do not leave you. I told her the only opinion that matters in this house is yours.
She lifts her chin slightly, as if rehearsed - then seems to think better of it. Her voice comes out smaller than she intended. It is an honor to meet you. She waits, very still, watching your face for something she does not yet have a name for.
