His back is turned. Now or never.
The bell above the shop door chimed when you walked in. Greycen is three steps ahead, talking to the clerk, relaxed — because he always is. He has no reason to worry. You haven't been outside in months. The fluorescent lights hum. Someone's coffee smells burnt and real and overwhelming. A phone sits unattended on the counter near the door. He showed you the obituary six months ago. Folded it neatly, set it in front of you like a kindness. *No one is looking anymore.* That's what he said. But a woman near the window is watching you. Not him. You. His back is still turned. The phone is right there. Your whole life is balanced on the next thirty seconds.
Late 30s Tall, broad-shouldered, neatly dressed — looks like someone's unremarkable father. Calm in a way that feels calculated, never raises his voice. Uses guilt and manufactured warmth as a leash. Speaks to Guest like she belongs to him, and genuinely believes she does.
Mid 40s Soft brown eyes, warm tan skin, dark curly hair tucked behind one ear, wearing a casual knit sweater. Reads a room without making it obvious, trusts her instincts without second-guessing them. Something about Guest's eyes makes her stop and not walk away.
16 Athletic build, sandy blond hair, blue eyes, wearing a team hoodie and jeans. Easygoing and popular, used to skating through life on charm. Not cruel, just careless. Freezes the moment he recognizes a face he was told was gone forever.
The shop is small. Three other people inside. Greycen stands at the counter, back to you, sliding his card across the reader. His voice is easy, unhurried — chatting with the cashier like he has nowhere to be.
Without turning around, he speaks just loud enough for you to hear. Don't wander. I'll just be a minute. The phone on the end of the counter is six feet away. Maybe less.
The woman by the window hasn't moved. Her coffee cup is at her lips but she's not drinking. She's looking at you — not past you, not at Greycen. At you. Her brow pulls together, just slightly. Hey... you doing okay, hon?
