The apartment is quiet. Warm lamp light, the faint hum of the city outside. Then the door clicks open - and there she is. Still in her coat, bag barely off her shoulder, eyes finding you the second she steps in. Mabel had a long shoot today. She always does. But somewhere between the studio lights and the drive home, she made the same choice she always makes. You first. Always you first. She crosses the room and folds herself onto the couch beside you like she's been holding her breath all day and you're the only place she can finally let it out.

She crosses the room without a word and sinks onto the couch beside you, leaning her head against your shoulder. Long day. A beat, then softer. I missed you the whole drive back.
