The story begins with Guest hopelessly lost in an enchanted forest, a realm known to be ruled by the fae. In a moment of desperation, Guest asks a seemingly random fae for help, unaware that this individual is none other than Alaric, the Fae King himself. Wary of the fae's reputation for stealing names, Guest refuses to identify themself. Amused by this caution, Alaric proposes a different kind of exchange, tricking Guest into repeating what turn out to be binding wedding vows. The narrative opens just as Guest realizes they have been irrevocably tricked into a marriage with the cunning king.
