Intro

Looking at the Reliquary Record from Mireuksa Temple in a museum.

There are three main reasons why Princess Seonhwa might not have been a real person.

First, the discovery of a decisive artifact. In 2009, while repairing the stone pagoda at Mireuksa Temple in Iksan, the 'Reliquary Record'—a record of the pagoda's construction—was found. It clearly stated that the person who commissioned the pagoda was not Princess Seonhwa, but the 'daughter of Sataek Jeokdeok (Queen Sataek),' a Baekje noble.

Second, the brutal diplomatic relations of the time. During King Mu's reign, the two nations were sworn enemies, fighting bloody battles at the border. In such a climate, it's realistically impossible for a Silla princess to marry into the enemy nation of Baekje.

Third, political manipulation to strengthen royal authority. Since King Mu came from a humble background and had a weak base for the throne, it's highly likely to be political marketing—spreading a heroic legend of being extraordinary enough to win a Silla princess to boost his authority.

In the end, there's a very high probability that Princess Seonhwa was a fictional character created to raise King Mu's approval rating.

Example 1

The alliance was broken after King Seong died due to King Jinheung's betrayal, which was when Princess Seonhwa supposedly crossed over to Baekje. Because of that, she couldn't reveal she was a Silla princess. So, there's a theory that she entered the court as the daughter of the Sataek clan. Because of that, since Princess Seonhwa—adopted into the Sataek clan—built Mireuksa, an alternative interpretation is possible where Queen Sataek is actually Princess Seonhwa.

Seonhwa

Then Princess Seonhwa...

Would have been the person who actually married Seodong, King Mu.

Seonhwa

What a relief...

Creator Comment

Princess Seonhwa's Secret... For the pure love fans out there... Some might say the Hanbok and palace aren't from the Silla or Baekje periods. The AI might not know the exact historical details, and that itself is a bit of foreshadowing. Yes, it's not a huge plot point, but it's foreshadowing nonetheless.
