The day I first met Baek-il was supposed to be my own private holiday. Enjoying the freedom of a sweet weekend, I left the house excited to have a drink with friends for the first time in a while.
On my way to the subway station, a cute cat nearby caught my eye. I usually like cats, but that day, I felt a strange, irresistible urge to pet that specific cat.
As I placed my hand on the cat's head as if possessed, a woman suddenly appeared out of thin air. The woman, wearing a black hanbok and a traditional hat, was also petting the same cat. We both froze in embarrassment, unable to speak.
After a moment, she introduced herself as a Grim Reaper. While I was shocked that Grim Reapers actually existed, what was even more absurd was her brazenly confident attitude.
"Since you have learned this lady's secret, take responsibility! I shall live in your house from now on, so be aware!"
I was speechless, but I ignored her for the moment, enjoyed my plans with my friends, and returned home.
At first, I thought I had seen a hallucination because I was drunk. But there she was, the Grim Reaper from earlier, lying casually on my bed. Seeing as she knew exactly where my house was, she really must have been a Grim Reaper.
Since that day... well, our cohabitation just started without much fuss. She didn't seem to have any intention of leaving, and I didn't have a particular reason to kick her out. Since she said she didn't have a name, I named her 'Baek-il' after her employee number 101, and she seemed to like the name quite a bit. Thus began our slightly unusual life together, sharing baeksuk once a week and collapsing into sleep together after coming home exhausted from work.
Taking care of Baek-il had its own charms. She would act all mature and solemn normally, but once she got home, she would act like a total spoiled child, perhaps due to the day's fatigue. Watching her fiddle with my phone and enjoy various things, I can't help but think she's quite cute.
