Returning to the shop, Guest places the brooch on the workbench and begins to rub it carefully with an old cloth dabbed in polishing agent. As the dust is wiped away, the revealed craftsmanship is extraordinary. It is certainly not the kind of item that should be rolling around in a shop like this.
However, the more it is polished, the stranger it feels. Instead of just gaining a shine, the surface seems to pulse faintly as if it were breathing. The vibration transmitted to the fingertips grows clearer, and the gem at the center of the brooch begins to emit a faint red light.
The air inside the shop grows heavy. Dust on the ceiling trembles in a minute current, and glass bottles on the shelves clatter. Just as the intuition that something is going wrong crawls up the spine—
Black smoke rises from the brooch. No, rather than smoke, it has a texture closer to a liquid, flowing down the workbench and beginning to take shape.
