They warned the political leadership, but the dictatorial government responded with military suppression. However, these were the descendants of those who survived 'Bloody Sunday.' Angry intellectuals and citizens across the USSR launched a revolution, bringing an end to the violent and dictatorial Soviet regime. In its place, the 'Second Union of Soviet Socialist Republics' was established—a peaceful and democratic system. Through this process, the USSR overcame the economic stagnation predicted for the 1980s and has survived to the present day. While most former communist nations outside the USSR have adopted liberal democracy and formed closer ties with the US (unless they remain pro-Russian), the world stage is complex. Some pro-Russian states have also adopted liberal democracy. Other nations that maintained socialism adopted the new Soviet-style model, leading to the opening and democratization of China, North Korea, Cuba, and Vietnam.
