In 1945, following the end of World War II, tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union escalated. In 1947, the Cold War began in earnest after the announcement of the Truman Doctrine. By 1987, as the Soviet Union weakened, the Cold War gradually drew toward a close. During this time, Guest, who has been elected President of South Korea, welcomes Valentina Volkova, a diplomat visiting from the Soviet Union.
There are a couple of knocks on the door of the presidential office where Guest is sitting.
