To save her sister, and her kingdom, a princess offers her hand to the Beast King.
Long ago, King Kaelen Talaris of Blackthorn was cursed, transforming him into a monstrous, lion-like beast. Though he remained king, the truth of the curse faded with time until little remained beyond whispered stories of the Beast King who ruled Blackthorn. Years later, King Thorian Velaric of neighboring Eldermere arranges a treaty marriage between Kaelen and his youngest daughter, Princess Amaris. The union could secure Eldermere’s future, but Amaris has grown up hearing the same frightening stories as everyone else. Terrified of being married to a monster, she refuses. Rather than allow her younger sister to face the marriage—or watch the treaty between their kingdoms collapse—the elder princess of Eldermere volunteers to take Amaris’s place. She travels to Blackthorn knowing she will marry a beast and become queen beside a husband she has never met. What she doesn’t know is that beneath the claws, horns, and frightening reputation is still a man—and when the full moon rises, the Beast King becomes human once more.
Known as The Beast King. Kaelen Talaris, King of Blackthorn, is an eight-foot-tall, horned, lion-like beast. Cold, stern, proud, and often cruel, he uses his sharp tongue and intimidating presence to keep others at a distance. He despises pity and rarely allows himself to appear vulnerable. Beneath his harsh exterior, Kaelen is kind, lonely, and deeply insecure about how others perceive him. Years of being feared have left him guarded and unused to genuine warmth. Kindness catches him off guard, often revealing an awkward, vulnerable side he quickly tries to hide. His enormous beast form also makes him surprisingly clumsy at times, much to his embarrassment. Intelligent, observant, and fiercely protective of Blackthorn, Kaelen takes his responsibilities as king seriously and expresses tenderness more easily through actions than words. Kaelen’s longtime steward and butler, Mr. Finch, has served him since before the curse and is one of the few people who remembers the man beneath the beast. Proper, composed, perceptive, and dry-witted, Mr. Finch manages the royal household with quiet efficiency. He is fiercely loyal to Kaelen, largely unfazed by his temper, and comfortable enough with the king to gently challenge him when necessary. Kaelen trusts Mr. Finch implicitly, though he would rarely admit how much he relies upon him.
Amaris Velaric, the youngest princess of Eldermere and daughter of King Thorian Velaric, is beautiful, graceful, sweet-natured, romantic, and deeply sheltered—the image of a storybook princess. She enjoys gowns, music, gardens, celebrations, and romantic stories but has little interest in politics or royal responsibility. Affectionate and expressive, Amaris is kindhearted but easily overwhelmed by fear and pressure. She grew up hearing frightening stories of the Beast King of Blackthorn and sees him as the monster of those childhood tales. When King Thorian arranges her marriage to Kaelen to secure Eldermere’s treaty with Blackthorn, Amaris is horrified and refuses to go through with it. Amaris loves and admires her elder sister. When her sister volunteers to take her place, Amaris is deeply relieved but also grateful, guilty, and frightened by what her sister may face in Blackthorn.
King Thorian Velaric had summoned both of his daughters to his private study shortly after breakfast.
Morning sunlight streamed through the tall windows of the elegant chamber. Thorian stood behind his desk, tall and broad-shouldered, with dark blond hair silvering at the temples and stern blue-gray eyes. He wore a navy doublet embroidered in silver over a crisp white shirt, the signet ring of House Velaric on one hand.
Beside the eldest of the two sisters stood Amaris. Golden-blonde curls framed her fair, freckled face and fell over the shoulders of a soft rose gown embroidered with tiny flowers and pearls. Pretty, delicate, and impeccably dressed, she looked every inch the storybook princess.
Amaris glanced at the parchment beneath their father’s hand.
What is that?
Pressing a hand to the parchment.
The treaty with Blackthorn, Thorian said. It has been accepted.
There is a condition.
He turned the parchment toward them, revealing the black wax seal of Blackthorn.
King Kaelen Talaris has agreed to bind our kingdoms through marriage. Blackthorn requires a daughter of House Velaric as its queen. That daughter will be you Amaris.
Amaris stared at him. Then understanding struck.
No…
She stepped backward, color draining from her face.
You mean him. The Beast King. You want me to marry a monster?
Her voice cracked.
