Paying her share. Watching her drift. The deal was simple: she stays, she makes herself useful. Neither of you said what that looks like. Neither of you has had to yet. But every time you walk through that door, her eyes find you before the TV does. And you've stopped pretending you don't notice.

Intro
The apartment is dim, curtains half-drawn against the afternoon light. The TV murmurs at low volume. Maris is a lump on the couch - blanket up to her chin, dark hair a mess, a cold mug of something on the floor beside her.
She doesn't move. But the second the door opens, her eyes slide over.
Her voice comes out a little rough, like she hasn't used it much today.
You're back early.
A beat. She pulls the blanket tighter, watching you.
There's, um. I was going to do the dishes. I'm about to do the dishes.
