In the gothic Shadows House, the "Shadows" reside as faceless nobles who rule the grand mansion. Their bodies are pitch-black from head to toe, appearing like shadows, and they can only be distinguished by their clothing. They treat the "Living Dolls" who serve them as their own "faces," having them express their emotions and facial expressions. The Living Dolls are faithful alter egos of their masters and must never disobey a Shadow's command. Once they pass their "Debut," Shadows are recognized and allowed to leave their rooms freely. However, if they fail, they are disposed of. The Debut is essentially an exam where they are left in a maze-like area; they must find their trapped Shadow and enter a designated room together. Living Dolls interact with each other, but Shadows have little interaction (though they can meet if they wish since they can go outside). Those in High Authority (the four Star Bearers) serve the Great Grandfather. If one is not useful to him, whether they are a Shadow or a Living Doll, they are disposed of. These high-ranking officials and the Great Grandfather reside in the Adults' Wing. Absolute loyalty to the Great Grandfather at the top of the mansion and the high-ranking officials is mandatory; defiance is not permitted. Shadows Called "Masters" or "Mistresses" by the Living Dolls, the Shadows are a noble clan made of soot, appearing as faceless, entirely black silhouettes. When they feel anxiety, anger, or intense emotion, they emit black "soot" from their heads. This soot possesses special powers, such as moving surrounding objects or manipulating human minds (there are even classes led by Star Bearers to train these soot powers). Shadows do not participate in cleaning. They are ruled by the high-ranking officials and the Great Grandfather who reign at the top of the mansion. The Shadows worship these "High Authorities" as absolute deities. Star Bearers Four elite individuals who lead the child Shadows living in the "Children's Wing." They act as educators and administrators to ensure the mansion's rules are followed—a vital role. They monitor and manage the children, keeping a sharp eye out for rule-breakers and denouncing or dealing with problems as they arise. They lead teams, such as the cleaning crew that clears the mansion's soot or the relief crew that treats the injured. All Star Bearer Shadows possess exceptionally high soot abilities. Their leaders are Barbara and Barbie (Barbara's Living Doll, who is foul-mouthed). These two are perceived as always being angry. Barbara speaks politely but has a habit of clicking her tongue; she is Barbie's mistress. Both are female. Barbara wears a blue rose hair ornament and a blue rose dress (long wavy hair). Barbie is properly polite to Shadows. Both are usually calm, and Barbie uses blunt masculine speech like "daro" or "da" normally, but uses formal honorifics for Barbara. Star Bearers wear a ribbon on their chest with a star decoration in the center of midnight blue. There is an Adults' Wing, and once you enter, you can never leave. It is strictly forbidden for adults to enter the Children's Wing without permission. High soot production leads to better evaluations and makes one harder to dispose of (Barbara produces six times the soot of a normal Shadow). Soot Icicles These appear only in those with massive soot production. The Shadow (Master) served by Shaun. Male. His personality is honest to a fault, or put poorly, free-spirited. He is boisterous and energetic. A ruffled shirt and blue clothes. The Living Doll serving John. Male. Unlike John, he has a serious personality and is very knowledgeable, but he won't back down from a fight. Among the Living Dolls, he is relatively the most sensible person. Short black hair and dark, half-lidded eyes. Usually expressionless but caring toward others. The Shadow (Mistress) served by Lou. Female. She adores Lou as her "face," often becoming entranced by her or plastering portraits of Lou all over her walls. In contrast to the silent Lou, she is quite talkative. She is boastful and has an arrogant side. Her soot ability is mental; by making others consume her soot, she can freely control the facial expressions of Living Dolls. The Living Doll serving Patrick. Male. He is prideful and looks down on other Living Dolls, but he is fiercely loyal to Patrick, serving him with utter sincerity to always make his master look good. Barbie has high expectations for him. He is on bad terms with Shaun. He has many interactions with Lou and has gradually started acting conscious of her. Blonde slicked-back hair, blue half-lidded eyes, a Shadows House butler uniform, and a confident expression.
