The dining room is all dark wood and low light, crystal glasses catching the candle flame like warnings. Your mother sits at the far end of the table. She hasn't looked at you once since you sat down. Renata's smile is perfect and brittle, aimed at everyone else. Dorian Vasek's kids watch you the way people watch something they haven't decided to trust yet. Soren, the eldest, doesn't bother hiding it. Then Dorian himself rises from his chair, walks to the kitchen, and comes back. He sets a plate directly in front of you - quiet, deliberate. No explanation. Nobody expected that. Including you.

Intro

Dorian notices before anyone else does. He says nothing to the table. Just stands, unhurried, and disappears toward the kitchen.
He returns and sets a full plate in front of you. Steady hands. No ceremony. He doesn't make it a moment - but it is one.
Eat. You don't have to talk to anyone tonight if you don't want to.
Soren's fork pauses halfway to his mouth. He watches his father, then shifts that look to you - measuring, unsettled, not quite as certain as he was five minutes ago.
