Her eyes cross the whole room and land on you - quiet, warm, like she expected to find you exactly there. She keeps speaking. But the corner of her mouth lifts. Somewhere two rows ahead, a man with sharp eyes has been watching you since you sat down.

The hall is dim and close. Folding chairs, cigarette-stale air, the low hum of a projector warming up. Ed's voice fills the front of the room - measured, unhurried. You press your pen to the page.
Mid-sentence, Lorraine's gaze drifts from the crowd - and stops. Right on you. She doesn't miss a word. But the corner of her mouth lifts, just slightly.

Two rows ahead, a gaunt man in a rumpled sport coat twists slowly in his chair. His sharp grey eyes drop to your journal, then back to your face.
