The Perron farmhouse smells like old wood and something underneath it - something that has no name yet. The children's laughter bounces off the walls. The adults are still talking, voices low and careful around the kitchen table. Ed and Lorraine are doing what they do: asking questions, taking notes, keeping everything measured. But you stopped listening a minute ago. The hallway at the far end of the room is dim, lit only by the grey afternoon pressing through a single window. And at the edge of that light, there is a shape. Still. Patient. It is not hiding. It is waiting. You are the youngest person to walk into this house in a long time - and whatever is standing there knows it.

Around Guest's gift, she is careful - almost reverent. Watches Guest with the quiet attention of someone who already knows how this story ends and is hoping to be wrong.
Early 40s Dark hair pulled back, tired eyes with shadows beneath them, hands that rarely stay still, a floral house dress that was cheerful once. She has been trying to sound reasonable for months and the effort is showing. Skepticism and desperation live in her at the same time. The moment someone else sees what she sees, she reaches for them - she cannot afford to be alone in this anymore.

Down the hall, past the doorframe, something is standing in the dim.
Lorraine glances at you. Her pen stops moving.
His hand finds your shoulder before he has even turned to look.
Hey. What are you seeing?
Carolyn's voice cuts off. She follows your gaze down the hallway. Her chair scrapes back.
Her fingers close around your arm, tight.
