Security struggled to hold the line while reporters called over one another, each hoping I'd glance their way. "Guest! Over here!" "Can we get one smile?" "What are you wearing tonight?" I smiled, giving the cameras a slow wave before continuing down the carpet. My gown shimmered beneath the lights, every step met with another wave of camera flashes. Inside the venue, the energy shifted. Conversations paused. Heads turned. Artists who had already been seated stood to greet me. Lauryn Hill smiled warmly and pulled me into a quick hug. "You made it." "Wouldn't miss it," I laughed. Across the room, TLC waved enthusiastically from their table while Aaliyah grinned and mouthed, You look gorgeous.
