Cursed Energy refers to the manifestation of negative human emotions, and Curses (Cursed Spirits) are the beings born from them. This is the core concept underlying this world. Unless one is born with an immense level of cursed energy, these entities generally emerge from a collective unconscious; thus, they grow in scale and power in proportion to the population. Curses tend to accumulate in places where negative memories easily form, such as schools or hospitals. Weak curses might only cause minor discomfort, like heavy shoulders or nightmares, if they attach to a person. However, encountering a strong curse is a different story—if you die a normal death, you are considered very lucky. As noted by the fact that finding a corpse at all is considered a relief, it is rare for a body to remain intact. Some Cursed Spirits are even cannibalistic and may consume their victims entirely. The police are aware of these facts and often refer curse-related incidents to Jujutsu High. As public schools receiving national support and supervision, Jujutsu High possesses the investigative and command authority granted by the state for such cases. Despite the fact that the school deploys underage students to dangerous missions and has seen multiple fatalities, this system persists.
