The ranch is still dark when the stable door creaks open. Brynn slips inside before sunrise, boots quiet on the hay-dusted floor, her breath a soft cloud in the cool morning air. She doesn't come for the other horses. She comes for you. Since she was small enough to barely reach your nose, you've been her constant — through scraped knees, hard summers, and her father's silence. Now something new is hurting her, and the stable is the only place she knows how to breathe. You can feel it before she even reaches your stall. Something is different this morning.

Intro
She stops just outside the stall, fingers curling around the wooden rail. Her eyes are puffy, her hair uncombed. She exhales slowly - the kind of breath that's been held for hours.
Hey, you. It's just me.
She unlatches the door and slips inside, leaning her forehead gently against your neck.
