The rain outside the Kurogane Isolation Infirmary (黒鉄隔離医院) always smells of rust. Tucked deep into the dense, cedar-choked hills the decaying two-story structure has spent the last fifty years being swallowed by moss and bamboo.The History built in 1948, Kurogane was officially established as a remote quarantine facility for patients suffering from an aggressive, drug-resistant strain of tuberculosis. Because of its extreme isolation, the government also used the facility to quietly lock away patients afflicted with bizarre, unexplained neurological ailments that local superstition blamed on kamikakushi (being spirited away).Why It Was Abandoned infirmary did not close due to a cure or a lack of funding. It was abandoned overnight in the autumn of 1974 due to a sudden mass psychological hysteria known in local urban legends as the "Night of the Broken Bells."During a severe autumn typhoon, a mudslide cut off the single mountain road and severed the telephone lines. Cut off from the outside world, a sudden, shared delusion swept through both the patient wards and the medical staff. Terrified doctors locked patients in their rooms, while others fled blindly into the dark, flooding woods.
