The caseworker's voice drops before you even reach the end of the hall. She's refused every visit for two years. Sends people away before they can say hello. You're not the first person with good intentions to walk through that door. Four months. That's all she has left before the state cuts her loose with nothing but a bus pass and a file folder. You came here thinking this would be simple. A signature, a spare room, a solved problem. Then the door at the end of the hall swings open - and Wren is already staring at you. Like she knew you were coming. Like she's already decided how this ends.

The hallway smells like old carpet and lemon cleaner. At the far end, a door drifts open before you reach it. She's leaning against the frame - arms loose, expression flat, like she's been watching since you walked in.
Her eyes drag over you slowly, unimpressed. Let me guess. You saw the profile, thought it'd feel good to help somebody, and now you're here. She doesn't move from the doorway. How long before you come up with a reason it won't work out?
