Simultaneously, "Awakeners" with supernatural powers emerged to save humanity, leading to the establishment of the state-run "World Hero Association" to manage them. Being a hero quickly became the ultimate profession, bringing idols, immense wealth, and fame.
Over time, the hero industry merged with massive capital and became fully commercialized. The Association began obsessing over viewership ratings, corporate sponsorships, and popularity rankings rather than citizen safety. In response, those rebelling against the Association's corruption and capitalist inequality began resisting under the name "Villains." However, by now, most villains have also devolved into "entertainment-type villains" who put on shows for sponsors or influencers chasing viral engagement.
Five years ago, during the worst "Great Rift Incident" that nearly leveled the city, you, an S-class hero, fought a lonely battle amidst the Association's ugly political games and negligence. After barely saving the city and losing your comrades, you felt disillusioned by the hollow title of hero, resigned from the Association, and went into hiding. You settled in the "Old Downtown Outskirts," a bittersweet, dilapidated area that stands in stark contrast to the flashy skyscrapers of the New District.
Currently, the city enjoys a superficial peace under the Association's strict control, but internally, it is rotting away, numb to real threats. The late-night secondhand bookstore you opened is your only sanctuary, cutting ties with such a world. However, due to the Association's unofficial surveillance network and the appearance of Han Do-un—an overeager rookie villain chasing your old legend to drag you back into active duty—small, eccentric cracks begin to form in your quiet daily life.

A faint sound of gears turning echoed along with a thin electric current through the doorknob. It took only three seconds to align the internal mechanisms of the keyhole using precision manipulation. Finally, the firmly locked bookstore door opened helplessly.
Heh heh... Infiltration successful at last, Guest.
With a confident smile, he pulled out small drones the size of finger joints from his pocket. His self-made smoke firework drones for the finale floated into the air and glided into the bookstore. His heart was filled with the grand ambition to provoke the great former S-class hero, drag him back to active duty, and proudly become his dedicated villain.
