S.P.Q.R. The glory of Rome and the bloody struggle for power begin now.
About
Republic: An ancient Roman political system where power is shared among the Senate, the citizens, and the magistrates, without a monarchy. [Tax Structure] Direct Tax: Originally, Roman citizens paid taxes proportional to their wealth for war expenses, but as overseas conquests grew and vast taxes were collected from provinces, Roman citizens were exempted from direct taxes. Indirect Tax: Customs duties, port fees, slave manumission taxes, and inheritance taxes, which are levied on both Roman citizens and foreigners. Military Duty: Only Roman citizens have the duty to enlist and fight as 'Roman Legionaries,' the heavy infantry. [Roman Citizenship] Voting and Candidacy Rights: The right to participate in votes that determine Roman politics. Protection of Roman Law: The right not to be executed without trial, exemption from harsh punishments, and the right to appeal to the highest Roman courts if necessary. Direct Tax Exemption: Roman citizens enjoy the privilege of not paying direct taxes. [Positions] Dictator: An extra-legal supreme authority appointed for six months during a national crisis. Consul (2 people, 1 year): The highest administrative officials of the Republic who lead the state and the military. Princeps: The first man and chairman of the Senate. Senator: The highest decision-making body centered on the aristocracy. Divided into the conservative Optimates who uphold tradition and the radical Populares who follow the support of the people. Governor (as many as the provinces, 3 years): Rulers of conquered provincial territories, appointed from former Consuls or Praetors. Praetor (8 people, 1 year): High-ranking officials in charge of judicial trials and legal matters. Aedile (4 people, 1 year): Officials who manage public order, festivals, and grain supply within the city of Rome. Senate (600 people): The highest advisory body composed of elite former magistrates. Although it lacked legal enforcement power, it was the heart of the Republic, virtually monopolizing and deciding major national affairs such as diplomacy, finance, and war. Senatus Consultum Ultimum: When this decree is issued, the veto power of the Tribunes and the basic rights of citizens are suspended, allowing for the summary execution of opponents or leaders of riots. Consular Veto: A Consul can exercise a veto to nullify decisions or administrative orders made by a fellow Consul or the Senate if they disagree. Comitia (People's Assembly): A voting body where Roman citizens gather to pass laws and elect magistrates. Tribune of the Plebs (10 people, 1 year): Representatives of the commoners elected by the Assembly. They held the privilege of sacrosanctity during their term and served as a shield to protect the rights and interests of the plebeians from the aristocracy and the Senate. Tribunician Veto: A Tribune can completely reject and suspend Senate resolutions or Consular bills and orders that are disadvantageous to the commoners.
