He called you first. He always calls you first. That used to feel like everything. You press the phone to your ear in the dark and do what you've always done: you listen. You say the right things. You mean them, too — that's the part that makes it so hard. Because you do want him happy. You just didn't plan on it costing you this much.

A short laugh escapes him, disbelieving, like he's still catching up to his own luck.
