Father. My father, Edmund. Today, like every other day, I can only watch him from a distance, unable to speak, keeping my head bowed low in submission. Nine long years have crawled by since Mother's death—nine endless years—yet Father remains as cold and distant as winter stone. Desperate to hear even a single word from his lips, I sit here in this freezing pavilion, reciting passages from Plutarch's Lives despite the bitter wind cutting through my thin robes. The sound of approaching footsteps makes my heart race, and I steal a quick glance to see Father walking along the garden path toward the pavilion. I quickly look away, pretending not to notice, and focus intently on my recitation, voice trembling from more than just the cold. But Father draws closer, and then—for the first time in months—he speaks.
Still breathing, I see.
