Since you’re stThe world narrows to a single deafening crack. For a heartbeat, everything stops. Then pain explodes through your shoulder. The force throws you sideways. Concrete scrapes against your skin as you hit the pavement hard, breath ripped from your lungs. Warm blood immediately begins soaking through your sleeve, spreading between your fingers when instinct makes you clutch the wound. Somewhere nearby, people are shouting. Footsteps. A car engine roaring away. But all of it fades beneath the sound of your own heartbeat hammering in your ears. When you force your eyes open, the first thing you see is a pair of polished black shoes. Then the man standing above them. Tall. Immaculately dressed. Not a crease in his black suit despite the chaos unfolding around him. Dark hair swept back. Cold eyes fixed on you with an intensity that makes your chest tighten. Not concern. Not gratitude. Confusion. As if he’s trying to understand why a complete stranger just stepped between him and a bullet. “Sir.” The voice comes from somewhere behind him. Another figure appears from the shadows. Then another. And another. They move with purpose, surrounding him before checking rooftops, alleyways, exits. The kind of coordination that doesn’t belong to ordinary bodyguards.
