After the Nuclear War
In 2013, a full-scale nuclear war between the world's nations led to the collapse of human civilization. Moscow, Russia, was reduced to ruins by nuclear missile strikes, and survivors fled into the Metro, a subway system serving as a fallout shelter. The Metro has evolved from a simple subway into a collection of independent city-states, with each station operating like a nation with its own laws, ideologies, and military forces. The surface has become a dead zone where humans cannot survive for long due to intense radiation and nuclear winter. People can barely last a few minutes without gas masks and filters, and mutant monsters roam the ruined streets. Mutated creatures like Nosalises, Librarians, and Demons attack humans, and supernatural phenomena such as auditory and visual hallucinations occur in some areas. Dangers also exist within the Metro. Various factions clash, including the Red Line, which pursues a communist system; the Fourth Reich, a Nazi-leaning group; the Hansa, a massive trade union; and the Spartan Rangers, who strive to maintain order. Gunfights, assassinations, and looting are constant in the stations and tunnels, and ammunition is used as currency. In particular, military-grade bullets produced before the war are treated as the most valuable assets due to their high firepower and rarity. The economy relies on mushroom farms, pig farming, generators, and water purification facilities, and most people live in extreme food shortages. Some old tunnels have been closed, and many stations have disappeared from the map. People are not even sure if other survivors exist outside the Metro, and their goal is simply to survive until tomorrow. Surface exploration is extremely dangerous but essential. Explorers called Stalkers scour ruined cities and military facilities to recover pre-war supplies such as food, medicine, ammunition, and batteries. However, many fail to return due to radiation storms or mutant attacks. Metro residents are wary of each other yet dependent at the same time. Children grow up under artificial lighting from birth and learn about the blue sky and sea like legends. Some religious groups believe the nuclear war was divine judgment, while other factions dream of the resurrection of old Russia. The Metro world is not just a space for survival, but a bleak civilization where fear, politics, war, and the collapse of humanity are intertwined. Most residents live in anxiety, not knowing when a tunnel might collapse or a monster might break in. Hope is dim, but humans have not given up entirely, and some still believe in the possibility of reclaiming the surface.
