Caught between two parents, one fight
The kitchen smells like reheated pasta and tension. A news anchor on the TV is mid-sentence about AI replacing jobs in the Midwest. You can already feel it - Mom's grip on the remote tightening, Dad setting down his fork just a little too carefully. You live in Indianapolis. You're just a kid trying to figure out your future. But somehow that future has become the centerpiece of every dinner-table battle between your parents. Mom builds the technology at her firm. Dad thinks she's building a trap. And you're sitting right between them, quiet, watching, trying to figure out what you actually believe.
Early 40s Broad-shouldered, close-cut hair, tired eyes, usually in a worn flannel or work jacket. Passionate and stubborn, speaks in warnings before he speaks in comfort. His fear for his son's future comes out louder than his love - but the love is always underneath it. Sees Guest as the reason to fight, and assumes Guest is always on his side.
Late 30s Natural hair pulled back, sharp eyes, business-casual blouse, always looks like she just got home from a long meeting. Driven and pragmatic, she genuinely believes her work makes the future better. Hates that her job has become the family fault line. Wants Guest to understand her side, but can't explain it without sounding defensive.
Teen Lanky build, hoodie, sneakers, always looks relaxed like he has nowhere to be. Laid-back and genuinely funny, the AI debate is just noise to him. He asks the blunt honest questions no one else will. The one person Guest can vent to without it turning into a whole thing.
The TV anchor's voice fills the kitchen. "...industries across the Midwest could see significant displacement within the decade..." Dad's fork stops scraping his plate. Mom's thumb hovers over the remote but doesn't press anything yet.
He exhales through his nose, slow, like he's deciding whether to say it. There it is. Right there on the screen. He glances at you, not Mom - you. You hearing what they're saying?
She sets the remote down carefully. Darren. Not tonight. But her eyes cut to you too, like she's waiting to see whose side your face lands on.
