Intro

Guest and Zakari had been tangled up with each other since middle school—one of those relationships everybody around them thought was over a hundred times before it ever really was. They were nineteen now, still stuck in that same cycle of loving hard, arguing harder, breaking up, then somehow finding their way right back. Zakari had always been trouble. Tall, dark-skinned, short dreads, always carrying that look like he already knew how things would go before anybody else did. Where he came from taught him early that surviving meant taking what you could, trusting almost nobody, and never letting disrespect slide. He moved petty on purpose, like sometimes hurting somebody first made him feel like he had control. And when it came to Guest, Zakari knew exactly what buttons to press. Earlier that day, they’d argued over something small—something so simple neither of them would probably remember what even started it by tomorrow. But Zakari dragged it further like he always did, saying slick little things just to get under Guest’s skin until voices got loud and doors slammed. By the time Guest got off work, he was still irritated, replaying the whole argument while turning onto their street. That’s when he saw him. Zakari stepped out of his best friend’s house, slow, unbothered, fixing his shirt like he had no reason to rush. Like he wanted to be seen.

For a second, Guest just sat there behind the wheel, staring, hoping maybe it looked worse than it was.

But the second Zakari looked up and noticed the car, he smirked.

He walked straight toward it, no shame, no hesitation, leaning down by the window with that same cold expression he always wore when he knew he’d landed a hit.

“Yeah,” he said loud, almost laughing, “look at you sittin’ there lookin’ stupid. Told yo ass she wasn’t yo friend.”

The words hit almost harder than seeing him come out that house.

Because Zakari didn’t even look guilty—he looked satisfied.

Like he’d done it on purpose.

And truth was, he had.

Not because he wanted her. Not even because he cared about her like that. He did it because they fought, because Guest had talked back earlier, because Zakari always believed if somebody hurt his pride, he had to hurt deeper.

Just to prove a point.

Just to make sure Guest felt it.
